When Memory Fades but Love Remains: A Reflection on And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer

And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer is written by Fredrik Backman and it is a story that can deeply move someone, it's about memory, family, and the quiet ways love persists even as the mind begins to fade. The author is known for his ability to mix emotional depth with humor using that he crafted this narrative that goes into what happens when someone you love slowly loses pieces of themselves.

The story centers around an aging grandfather whose memory is deteriorating because of his illness. As his thoughts keep getting more and more fragmented, he retreats into a symbolic place called “the square,” where memories, conversations, and emotions overlap. Using this imaginative space, the author shows how the mind tries to keep hold on important moments even when reality becomes harder and harder to grasp.

I feel like what makes this book more powerful is the relationship featured in it that is between the grandfather and his young grandson, Noah. Their conversations are sometimes playful and sometimes heartbreaking. They capture the essence of generational love. The grandfather is  scared of forgetting the people who matter most to him, while Noah (his grandson), with the innocence of childhood, just wants to be there with him.

The author wrote about memory loss with quite a bit of compassion. Instead of focusing solely on the tragedy of forgetting, he shines light on the warmth that remains in shared experiences. The book reminds readers that even when memories start to fade, the emotions that are attached to them often stay and linger.

Even though it has a heavy theme, this novella is also filled with small moments of joy and gentle humor. The author’s writing style is simple yet poetic. This style allows readers to connect deeply with the characters in a very short amount of time.

Some quotes I found interesting were:

“Constantly reading a book with a missing page that's always the most important one”

“Equations are magic and all formulas are spells”

“That’s the best present I’ve never been given”

In the end, I think this story is less about losing memory and more about holding on to love. It is a quiet reminder that relationships are not defined only by what we remember, but by the connections we create while we can.
