Last Book of Summer: Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch
Last Book of Summer: Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch
I recently read a book called Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch to end the summer. Since this book has a summer feel, I decided to read it right before fall officially started on September 22. Jenna Welch has written two other books similar to Love & Luck called Love & Gelato and Love & Olives which I thought were way better than Love & Luck.
Love & Luck is about a girl named Addie and her trip to Ireland for her aunt’s wedding in the summer. Addie has three older brothers but is especially close to Ian, the youngest brother. Addie and Ian are best friends to each other but over the past few months, they have started to grow apart due to a secret that Addie kept from him. After their aunt’s wedding, Addie had planned to fly to Italy to meet her friend Lina but Addie and Ian got into a huge fight at the wedding. Their mom says that they both have to go on the trip but they need to resolve their problems if they want to stay on their sports teams.
The morning Addie and Ian were planning to go to Italy, Addie wakes up to find that Ian is missing. Addie searches for Ian outside the hotel and finds him in a small car. She discovers that Ian has an Irish friend named Rowan and planned to go on a trip with him without intending to tell Addie. After a lot of convincing, they decide that Addie can come along with them and they will drop her off at the airport. Addie misses her flight so Rowan and Ian must take Addie along with them while keeping the roadtrip a secret from their family. On this roadtrip, Addie learns so many new things about her brother who she thought she was close to. She also tries to fix her relationship with her brother and come up with a solution to her secret.
One thing I liked about this book was how it connected to the other books. The main character in Love & Gelato is Lina, and Love & Luck is about Lina’s friend Addie. The main character of the Love & Olives has a minor role towards the end of Love & Luck. Another thing I like about this book is how the main character goes on a trip. In each of the three books the main character goes on a trip to a new country. Through the books, you get to experience the new places with the characters. However, in this book, the characters go on a roadtrip through the country so we get to see many tourist sites in Ireland instead of just one place in the country.
I didn’t enjoy how the book felt predictable at times. (Spoiler coming!) I thought it felt you knew that Addie and Ian will fix their relationship and everything will be resolved in the end. This made the book predictable from the beginning and the ending unsatisfying since you could already tell what would happen. And on top of that, Addie and Ian fighting got very repetitive. It felt like they argued at least once in each chapter and they would alway argue about the same thing so it got unexciting at times. Also, at the end of the book it feels like they suddenly solved their problems and the scene wasn't explained very well. On one page, they were angry at each other, and on the next page, they had resolved all of their problems, which doesn’t seem very realistic.
While this book had good elements like the road trip and its connections to the other books, I don’t think it was as good as the other two books written by Jenna Evans Welch. Love & Luck had a predictable and expected ending with lots of repetition. I thought this book had an unsatisfying ending, and overall, this book was my least favorite out of the three books in the series.
