Diary of a Wimpy Kid: is it as Funny as I Remember
For this blog period, I read the first two books of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rodrick Rules) because I remembered reading it a few years ago and I wanted to know if it was as funny as I remembered, or if I just had an embarrassingly horrible sense of humor. And I have some mixed opinions...
Book Blurb:
The story follows Greg on his journey to survive the hell we call middle school, and he does not have a very good time, but at least he's got his best friend Rowley. Greg has to deal with Middle School as well as his bully brother back home, who at one point even locks him in the basement.
What I Liked:
What kept me with this book was its relatability. Now personally, my middle school experience was not as bad as Greg's, but I did feel that there were the same core struggles: social anxiety, schoolwork, overall drama, etc. I also made it seem like my experience there was way worse than it actually was looking back. I thought this book was relatable, and a little funny. But that's kind of all it had going for it.
What I Didn't Like:
Now, I know that on my last blog I said I'll only post if I really like what I read, but that's not really the case with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. In my opinion, if you are unlike my entire elementary and middle school and don't read any of the books in this series, you aren't missing out on much. In my opinion, the book was really not that funny aside from a few moments, which disappointed me because humor was the primary element of the book I was expecting due to what I've heard from classmates and friends. Also, I don't think the fact that Greg is an absolutely horrible friend is talked about enough. He is constantly manipulating Rowley, and trying to make him an entirely new person just to "fit in" and "be cool". I mean, the book was okay I guess, but maybe just not my cup of tea.

I remember liking these books in elementary school, and one of the main things I remember was how bad of a friend Greg was. I liked how you organized this post, it's easy to read and entertaining!
ReplyDeleteI feel like these books are more aimed towards younger kids so it's valid that you didn't enjoy them that much.
ReplyDeleteNo exactly like Greg is borderline evil?? He constantly prioritizes himself over his brothers, parents, and best friend????
ReplyDeleteYeah, Greg is definitely not a great friend to Rowley but I still think these books are entertaining!
ReplyDeleteI'd always felt like I'd maybe been missing out by not reading any of these back then—I might still take a look at them but its nice to see another perspective
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know Greg went through some stuff, but he is overly selfish and he was probably overreacting. I remember loving this book as a kid, but I don't know if it will still be good now.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's interesting to see the difference between how Greg appeared to me at a younger age versus now. Great blog post!
ReplyDeleteI read through most of the series in elementary school and really enjoyed it. During end of year 7th grade Gabe convinced the class to watch the movie.
